Poultry owners of more than 250 birds, hatchery operators, live bird markets and poultry processing facilities have been directed by Ogun State government to register their company.
The registration is to be done with the ministry of Agriculture and in accordance with the Animal Disease Control Act of 2004.
The Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Mrs. Adepeju Adebajo, said the exercise is aimed at making the state have a database of all poultry farmers and operators in the state in order to control zoonotic and endemic diseases.
The exercise which has the approval of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PANOG), Ogun State Chapter, would enable the state to pay compensation to farmers in case of an outbreak of zoonotic diseases.
She further urged all stakeholders to cooperate and get actively involved in the exercise, threatening sanction upon defaulters.
