German Development Agency (GIZ) in collaboration with 20 local partners has trained 230,000 small farmers from Nigeria,Cote d’Ivoire,Ghana,Togo and Cameroon under its Farmer Business School Training (FBS).
According to GIZ, they cooperated with agricultural trade companies and microfinance institutions who would provide farmers with technical advice,advisory services, market information and financial services.
It also supports public and private extension services to provide business training for small farmers in Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Cameroon.
During the Farmers’ Business School Training that would end in 2018, farmers would be enlightened on cocoa production.
Furthemore, farmers would learn costs associated with improved production techniques and how they can increase yields and incomes through targeted investment.
FMARD Trains 75 Women On Cassava Production
GIZ said 440 trainers and supervisors were trained to handle the FBS programme and that one-fourth of its graduate who had been taught how to record their income and expenses and use agricultural input and labour were women.
He added that 99% of the trained farmers according to its poll have increased their cocoa and other crop yields by 100% while 60% have opened accounts with rural banks and their savings in those banks would be used as collateral for giving out loans.
