The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, with support from the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) has trained 100 women on the use of information and communications technology in agricultural development.
Mary Ekpere-Eta, director-general of the NCWD, said during an event held in Abuja that the women participants were drawn from various local government areas across 36 states of the country to ensure that Nigeria achieved the United Nations’ fifth sustainable development goal, which addresses gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls through the use of technology.
The Sustainable Development Goals Fund is an international multi-donor and multi-agency development mechanism created in 2014 by the United Nations to support sustainable development activities through integrated and multidimensional joint programs.

Among other things, the agency aims to end discrimination against women and girls everywhere and afford them equal rights to economic resources such as land and property.
According to Ekpere-Eta, the 100 women farmers from across the country were assembled for the training after a thorough screening process.
“They have been made aware of ICT techniques that can be leveraged for business development, access to finance, marketing and networking strategies, personal security, access to modern agricultural practices among others.

“As a result, participants were introduced to the global spatial database of land use, food prices, flooding in Nigeria and many other applications, as well as resources online, through which they can gather vital and timely information as farmers and make informed decisions on what to produce, when to produce and where to sell their products at a competitive price.”
In his remarks, BOA Managing Director Alwan Hassan assured the farmers that the government was ready to work with them to ensure high levels of food production and sufficiency.
