The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has endorsed the newly-formed Nigeria Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) and called for women to be supported and encouraged to engage in agricultural productivity for national development.

The President of AFAN, Arc. Kabir Ibrahim, made this call in Abuja during the Train-the-Trainers workshop on safety and security for women farmers drawn from the North Central Zone of the country, to give more priority to the security and safety of women in agriculture.

Ibrahim underscored the need for all well-meaning Nigerians and the government to place much premium support on women farmers in order to boost food production and achieve food security in the country.

“We know that women must be encouraged to do agriculture in Nigeria. I am glad that women are coming together. They are focused. Women in agriculture are reliable and credit-worthy. They will carve out a niche in agriculture. Everybody will look for them. AFAN will also look for them.” Ibrahim noted

National Coordinator and President of NWAPDI, Omolara Svensson, described the endorsement and support of her organization by AFAN as a welcome development, disclosing that the withdrawal of NWAPDI from AFAN became necessary as a result of the need to involve women in the agricultural sector, spanning production, processing, trade, and commerce.

She explained that it is high time to start paying more attention to the training of our farmers, food processors, and everyone else in the agricultural sector on the importance of security and safety on the farms and in the processing plants.

Svensson pointed out that the training targeted the trainers, adding that they have about 150 women, while the whole idea is that the Zonal State Coordinators would take the training back to their wards, spread it, and keep improving themselves. The training is also going on in the South West, taking place in Lagos State, and working next on the South, South East, North East, and North West.
