The Catfish and Allied Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFFAN), has distributed smoked catfish as a palliatives measure in support of government’s efforts to curbing the spread of COVID-19.

During the distribution of smoked fish to Oyo’s government at the Oyo State Secretariat, Oloye Rotimi, national president of CAFFAN said that the donation was to support the federal government in its allotment of provisions across the states to cushion the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Donations were made by the association in several states within the country, including Lagos, Oyo, and Rivers State as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

While fish is greatly nutritious with high protein content, it is also a suitable medium for the growth of micro-organisms – hence the need for smoking and other preservative means.

Smoking, however, is not only used to preserve fish, but also to add the unique taste and flavor generated by the smoking process.

Smoked fish being an earner of foreign exchange for Nigeria is being practiced all over the country as a source of livelihood, including farmers who have now decided to contribute in order to ameliorate the suffering of the less privileged amid the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the delivery in Lagos, led by Nurat Atoba, chairperson of CAFFAN’s Lagos State chapter, was conducted at the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority.

The donation of the smoked catfish in Rivers State was made at the government warehouse and then distributed to the state’s less-privileged and vulnerable populations.
