In a bid to expand Nigeria’s coffee value chain and position Cross River State as a key player in the industry, the state government has partnered with JR Farms, a Kwara State-based agribusiness firm. The partnership aims to develop a massive 30,000-hectare coffee plantation across 18 local government areas in the state over the next five years.

The initiative, which will commence with Arabica coffee cultivation in Boki and Obanliku Local Government Areas, is expected to enhance the state’s agricultural output, create employment opportunities, and attract investment in the coffee production industry. The choice of Boki and Obanliku is due to their possession of the necessary highlands and favorable climatic conditions for optimal coffee growth.

    Economic Benefits and Sustainability

To achieve the objectives of the partnership, JR Farms will collaborate with the Cross River State Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Development. The ministry will provide the necessary support and guidance to ensure the success of the project.

The development of the coffee plantation is expected to position Cross River State as a leading producer of high-quality coffee beans. This will not only boost the state’s economy but also contribute to Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil exports.
