    FG to Hunt down smugglers of poultry product, vendors

    The Minister of State for Agriculture, Heineken Lokpobiri, stated that it would soon commence clamping-down on poultry product smugglers .

    The Minister of State for Agriculture, Heineken Lokpobiri, stated that it would soon commence clamping-down on poultry product smugglers .

    This is because of its poultry industry and the hazard it poses to human health – He said this when he visited Amo Farm Sieber Hatchery (AFSH), Awe, Oyo State.

    He stated that government as part of its drive to boost local production of poultry products would also extend the clampdown to sellers of smuggled poultry products.

    In his address, the GMD of the farm lamented the effect of the economic meltdown on the farm. He said the meltdown has made the farm lose over two million day-old-chicks due to low patronage.

    Egg Importation Persists in African States

    He added that increase in the price of maize with regards to stabilization of prices, unavailability of grain all year round are some of the serious challenges facing the industry.

    Amo Byng Nigeria Limited, Diversay Solutions Limited, Natnudo foods Limited and DSL farmers are subsidiaries of Amo group of companies. Lokpobiri described the farm as the biggest indigenous poultry facilities and lauded the farm’s Group Managing Director, Dr. Ayoola Oduntan for creating jobs for over 2,000 rural dwellers.

    Mr. Lokpobiri  also assured that government would complement efforts of the farmers through provision of motorable roads, potable water for the host community and other infrastructure.

    The Nigerian Customs Service also disclosed that 102,099 cartons of poultry products were impounded from smugglers mainly in the South-South and South-Eastern part of Nigeria in the month of March 2017.
