Kano Dairy and Livestock Husbandry Cooperative Union (KADALCU) in collaboration with Outspan Nigeria Limited, has vaccinated no fewer than 1500 cattle against the Foot and Mouth Disease in Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano State.

Ahmed Adetunji, Manager, Outspan, Kano, while speaking during the vaccination program noted that the exercise against Foot and Mouth disease which is considered deadly among livestock is expected to enhance cattle health management and improve milk production in the country.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed ruminants like cattle, sheep and goats. The virus spreads either by direct contact with an infected animal or by contact with foodstuffs or by any other contaminated things.

It is a transboundary animal disease (TAD) that deeply affects the production of livestock and disrupts regional and international trade in animals and animal products. It is rarely fatal in adult animals but often results in high mortality in young animals due to lack of milk from the dam.

Adetunji reiterated that the vaccination exercise is in addition to other programs facilitated by the firm such as insemination of 1000 cows, the opening of a new milk collection centre to preserve the quality of milk produced locally and the training of smallholder dairy farmers on the adoption of modern farming practices.

“The vaccination exercise will remove constraints around dairy cattle health management which directly affects the cattle productivity level and by extension increases the quantity and quality of milk being produced locally,” he added.

Usman Abdullahi Usman, Chairman of the Kano Dairy Union, who was present at the event alongside other stakeholders, appreciated Outspan Nigeria Limited for its contribution to the growth aspirations of the dairy value chain.
