    NIHORT Encourages Youths on Plantain and Mushroom Farming 

    The National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan, Oyo State brought into the limelight that the cultivation of mushrooms and multiplication of materials for plantain holds various job opportunities for both youths and women.

    The NIHORT Executive Director, Abayomi Olaniyan, made it known that plantain serves as a major source of income for the smallholder farmers, bringing in much profit for those who understand the value chain very well.

    Olaniyan, after stating the various opportunities and importance in plantain and mushroom farming, also advised that a profitable agribusiness in these two commodities can strengthen people’s source of living.

    NIHORT Launches Tomato Innovation Policy

    Plantain is one of the most common staple foods, mostly grown in the tropical regions of Nigeria and West Africa while it’s planting is done once and the rest is harvest every season.

    An interesting fact about plantain farming is that it is harvested in batches. And, after the first batch of harvest, the plantain plant would keep producing more fruits till the harvest season is over.

    The Chairman of NIHORT Governing Board, Mohammed Garba pleaded with the people to utilize and give complete attention to every session, as the information they get will be very much useful towards making the country independent in the agricultural value chain.

    Mushroom farming is one of the notable farming businesses that hold a high prospect but has never gained much ground in Nigeria.

    Mushroom as fungi that grow on the soil or on the body of its food, usually decaying tree trunks has numerous health benefits aside from the delicious taste of edible mushrooms.

    In 2019, the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), organized training for youth and women on Ginger and Mushroom value chain.

    The training which was held in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, was with this goal of getting the potentials of the commodities for viable livelihood and for the National Economic Development purpose.
