Joint Unions of Research Institutes and Allied Institutions commenced an indefinite strike action on November 14, 2017 following the Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude towards a 15-day strike ultimatum issued on 30 October, 2017.
83 days into the strike, activities at research and agriculture institutions across the country have been grounded. The demands tabled before the government are; payment of 12 months arrears of 53.37 percent increase in salary; retreatment of the circular on non-skipping of grade level 10; 65 years retirement age for non-research staff, obtainable in the university; and peculiar allowance/earned allowances.
The institution has also demanded that there be a central body establishment which will be recognised as National Research Institutes Commission (NARICO), equate funding of research institutes and release of condition of service scheme.

The Federal Government has also been accused of paying lip service to the development of research in the country, by the CMD’s Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) along with Academic Staff Union of Research Institutes (ASURI), for JORAISU during its protest last Thursday. The Federal Government was blamed for failing to acknowledge research quality with its body language since the strike commenced, and that the recent no-work-no pay threatening enforcement policy is a mere threat.
