The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Springfield Agro in partnership with UPL introduces Lifeline, a pre-emergence weed killer to control and manage weed on farms.
Shani Srivastava, the Country Manager UPL, said at the launch of the product in Ibadan, the weed killer is effective on a wide range of annual and permanent weeds including both broadleaves and grasses. According to him, Lifeline residue will not remain on the soil after usage hence causing no harm to other subsequent planted crops.

The Principal Investigator for Cassava Weed Management Project for IITA, Professor Friday Ekeleme said most of the farmers use hoes and cutlasses to clear weeds, which triples their work on the farm.
According to Ekeleme, ineffective weed control in cassava leads to an average of 90% loss of the farm produce.
Bukar Usman, the Director of Veterinary Medicine and Allied Products (VMAP), a section of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), thanked IITA and other stakeholders for their contribution towards effective weed control solution on farms.

Usman said this step shows that stakeholders in agric are keeping up to their responsibilities to ensure both farmers and the environment are safe.
Scientists believe herbicides are much more than just weed killers because of the possibilities of exhibiting both beneficial and atimes, adverse effects on the environment. Â
