    FG Introduces Capacity Building for Pig Farmers

    The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Dev. has launched a capacity building training for pig farmers in Nigeria.

    This was revealed at a two-day workshop for pig farmers in Asaba by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Mohammed Bello Umar.

    Dr. Bello Umar said the training is one of the numerous attempts by the Federal Government to improve protein consumption in the country and equally aid Nigerian farmers to access international market through standard production practices.

    While citing an FAO study, the Perm Sec. said 38 percent of meat protein consumed across the globe is pork and with the local market in West Africa generating about 3 billion USD consumption value annually; where 80 percent is imported, there exist a huge domestic demand and supply opportunities.

    Pig diseases outbreak like African swine fever, foot-and-mouth dis-ease, brucellosis, trypanosomosis, etc has resulted in huge economic losses for farmers and investors alike.

    Goat Plague to be Eradicated in 2030

    In a recent study conducted by the University of Maiduguri, disease outbreaks were discovered as the major constraint to profitable pig production in Nigeria, a situation that can be managed with standard production practices.
