The Oyo State chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has praised the federal government on its distribution of farm implements and equipment to grassroots farmers in the state, adding that Nigeria is improving as these supports reach farmers without much stress.

John Olateru, AFAN state chairman, who supervised the distribution of the equipment at the association’s state secretariat in Ibadan, said it is the first time real farmers are getting farm implements directly from the federal government.

“Before now, we have to write through the Director of Agric in federal ministry of agric in the state and follow it up by going to Abuja. We may need to spend days in Abuja which could affect our farms but now, they channel it to us through the Minister. We have received it and we are sharing it to our members in the state as you can see.”

The access of farmers to modern agricultural inputs, together with the ultimate goal of maximizing the agricultural landscape’s productivity and development, is the backbone of any agricultural revolution.

These agricultural inputs range from improved seeds, fertilizers and crop protection chemicals to machinery, irrigation and training.

The chairman went further, advising the federal government to allow farmers to make use of its structures in rural areas for the benefit of the people rather than allowing it to waste away.

“It is disheartening that their structures are rotten away. Many of our members showed interest to make use of the structures but they told us that it is the same process as getting farm implements and equipment which we referred to as cumbersome.”
