Oyo State Government to Create a Central Fish Market

The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has disclosed his administration is making plans to invest hugely in the creation of a central fish market in order to boost the state’s economy and make fish readily available for consumption.

Engr. Makinde stated this at the Oyo State Agribusiness Strategic Planning retreat held in the Benin Republic. According to him, aquaculture is an important part of agriculture in Oyo State, and he believes the state can raise a standard market-ready catfish and tilapia in Nigeria.

The Governor further explained although there are currently fish markets in the state, there is a need for a central market for fish for easier accessibility.

Makinde said plans are ongoing through a public-private partnership arrangement to complete a number of automated silos and put them into use in order to solve the storage facilities challenges in the state.

The Governor reiterated his hope to help farmers identify themselves as integral stakeholder so that their approach to farming will aid the larger value chain development.

Recall that Governor Makinde at an event in Eruwa a few months back declared his government will depend strongly on a positive turnaround of the agricultural sector in Oyo state.
