A one-day stakeholders’ workshop was held for butchers at the Oko-Oba abattoir by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture to ensure illegal slaughtering activities at the abattoir is quelled completely and all operations in the state’s abattoir meet international standards.
Mr. Oluwatoyin Suarau, Commissioner for Agriculture, admonished butchers at the Oko-Oba abattoir to desist from unwholesome way of meat slaughtering and transporting while also stating that state’s resolve is to disallow unhygienic meat slaughtering in abattoirs and slaughter slabs.
He further stated that the present administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is committed to ensuring that international standard is met by all operations in the state abattoir and improving the butchers’ skills is the workshop’s target, especially at the Oko Oba abattoir. He also emphasized that the state government will not relent in establishing policies which would enhance the abattoir’s standard.
“Rehabilitation such as ban on Okada as means of transportation, use of the refrigerated meat van in meat transportation, deployment of experienced veterinary officers to abattoirs and slaughter slabs have been carried out at the abattoir,” he said.
He made it known that the state has organised a training to put an end to illegal slaughtering activities in the abattoirs, develop the skills of the butchers and would also not relent in policy implementation. “This is a time to correct all ills at the animal market and abattoir in general, so that no butcher will have any excuse for any form of illegal practices” he said.
